Vocation and family legacy

For Dr. Cosme Lavín Dapena, ophthalmology is much more than a profession: it is an inherited vocation. Son of Dr. María Teresa Dapena Crespo, from her he learned — and continues to learn — the values that define his practice: dedication to the patient, rigour and clinical dedication. That family legacy is the foundation on which he has built his whole career.

Training and professional career

Dr. Cosme Lavín Dapena trained in Barcelona, where he completed training periods at Clínica Dexeus and Hospital Parc Taulí (Sabadell), acquiring a solid foundation in surgical ophthalmology. He then spent 16 years at Hospital Universitario La Paz (Madrid) dedicated to complex glaucoma, working with multidisciplinary teams.

Co-author, with Dr. Pablo Alcocer Yuste, of Cirugía microincisional del glaucoma (SEO, 2016) and of international multicentre studies on the XEN implant. In cataract surgery he has experience in femtosecond laser surgery, mainly with the Catalys platform, and is trained in sub-1mm bimanual surgery. In refractive surgery, he has experience since the beginning of ICL phakic lenses, including PRL, and training in LASIK with Dr. Vergès and Dr. Cazal in Barcelona.

He has operated on more than 2,000 patients and has given more than 40 presentations at national and international congresses. Member of SEO, SEG, SERV, SECOIR, EUGS, AAO and ESCRS, he received the SOM 2013 Award and was co-author of the official SEO 2024 book: "Cirugía de los Glaucomas" (ISBN: 978-84-89085-86-2, 629 pages). He speaks Spanish, English and French, and keeps a firm commitment to innovation, training and professional ethics.

He currently works as Medical Director of the Clínica Oftalmológica Dapena Lavín, where he applies current techniques in glaucoma, cataract and refractive surgery.
